First of all, HAPPY NEW YEAR! And welcome to my first post of 2018. So, about a month ago I flew from Melbourne back home to Nairobi for a much needed break from the shit show that was 2017. It’s no secret that Australia is very far away and so it takes a long ass time to get to and from it. This time around, my flight path was: Melbourne – Abu Dhabi (14 hours), 3 hour layover, Abu Dhabi – Nairobi (5 hours 15 mins). Having done this journey about 4 times now and doing a lot of reading/watching videos of other peoples tips and tricks, I feel like I am becoming quite good at tackling that incredibly long flight. Here are some of the tips I’ve picked up along the way:
This is my number 1 tip for surviving a long haul flight. DRINK WATER! Cabin pressure really dehydrates you and drinking water throughout the flight and while you’re at the airport is very important. Keep an empty water bottle with you in your bag so you can fill it up on the plane and sip on it the whole flight.
- Walk around.
14/15 hours is an insanely long time to be seated in one position so walking around is essential. Some people are more prone to getting blood clots on planes (women who are on the pill, for example) so walking around during a long haul flight is essential to try and prevent that. Stretching is also just generally always a good idea, no one likes a leg cramp.
- Freshen up.
There’s nothing worse than getting off a long flight feeling stinky and gross. Some airlines provide you with a little bag with a toothbrush and toothpaste in it for long haul flights but not all of them do. So what I like to do is take my own little pack of travel minis on the flight with me (face wash, wipes, deodorant e.t.c) and freshen up about half an hour before we land. Having a fresh pair of underwear in your hand luggage also makes a world of difference!
- Take an eye mask.
If you’re someone who likes to sleep on planes, an eye mask is a must. For overnight flights, the lights will usually be turned off after dinner has been served to allow passengers to get some rest. However, not everyone wants to sleep and lots of people will still have their TV’s on or their overhead lights on to read a book which may make it hard for you to sleep. Slap that eye mask on to block out the light and you’ll be all good.
- Wear comfortable clothes.
This one is pretty obvious but honestly it’s one of the most important things. Sitting in a confined space for a long time is bad enough without having uncomfortable clothes on. I personally like to wear leggings, a baggy t-shirt and, of course, no bra (because bra’s are really just the devil #freethenips) when i’m going on a plane. Tight clothing will annoy the hell out of you a few hours in so try and wear whatever you’re most comfortable in.
So there you go, those are just a few of my tips that will make any long haul flight at least a little bit more comfortable. Long flights may be annoying but they usually mean you’re going somewhere exciting and travel is (almost) always a good thing so its all worth it, right?
